Developing Characters: Demon King

I had been very floaty until now with my work when it came to characters.

I didn't want to draw my old characters, for something like this I wanted a fresh story, characters, a new world to work and develop.

I sat down last night and thought, what could I do?

I came up with a rough story, one that I can develop throughout the course.

With this story came abundance of characters. And I was ready to work.

The first character I wanted to work on was the Demon King character. I wanted to use squares with his design, to make it so you get the feel that he's a big, rough guy, but keep his design quite soft.
His character is the Demon King. A ready to battle, war hero barbarian. But who loves his son, and is kind to his subjects.

I was a bit lost with his initial looks. I knew I wanted him to be square and a good father figure. Confident and strong. So how he would present himself wasn't an issue. It was getting the right look for him. A strong King.

I started with the square base.
Giving him a confident, almost hero like stance. I then worked on building him up. Making him look demon  while at the same time making him fatherly.

I then started to add to him, filling out certain bits.

The clothes was inspired by viking clothes.
I looked at films like How to Train Your Dragon, Conan The Destroyer and the game Skyrim for costume design.
I then did the line art and Colour.

I plan to develop him further as I progress.
