Animation Work

Pirate Travern.

For this exercise we had to make up mood boards and design a Pirates Tavern. I'm more experienced with character creation and design, so this was a challenge for me.
I started with my mood boards. I made 3, one for theme, one for props and objects and another for lighting. I didn't end up using the lighting as i went with a more styled approach of only using shades for the design. However the research into it did help me try and capture the feel I wanted for my design.
To begin with, I had a lot of video game references, which I later learned are less viable as a reference themselves as creators add different styles depending on the object. I wanted to use my recently learned technique of the horizon line. I wanted to give my drawing some sort of depth. I really liked the idea of a ship wheel as the chandelier. I feel like small things like that really capture the feel of a pirates tavern.
I will however say that I do think that my drawing doesn't feel pirate-y enough. I feel like I should have added more sea decor. Say a  pair of swords on the table, or nets on the wall. I also feel like it's too bright, even with the use of black and white shades. Maybe a orange-r light for the lanterns and candles would have fit the theme better as a shady underground bar.

Overall I feel like even though it was my first attempt at something new, I should have taken a lot more on board when it came to design. I feel like my work is too bare. But as someone who isn't good with backgrounds, this was a very big challenge for me, and I'm happy that it came out looking like an actual room.
